About Our Guest:
Stephen Pompea is Observatory Scientist Emeritus at NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory and served for two decades as the leader of its renowned education and public outreach programs. He is a Visiting Professor at Leiden University, the Netherlands as well as an Adjunct Professor at the James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences and Steward Observatory, Department of Astronomy, both at the University of Arizona.
Internationally recognized both for his work in science education and on optics, he was awarded the SPIE–International Society for Optics and Photonics Maria J. Yzuel Educator Award, the Robert A. Millikan Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the Esther Hoffman Beller Medal from the Optical Society of America (now Optica). He has played innovation and leadership roles in many competitively-funded science education research and development projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
